PRESENTATION OF NATIONAL STRATEGY FOR FINANCIAL EDUCATION

Today, hotel Sheraton Grand Tbilisi Metekhi Palace hosted the presentation of national strategy for financial education. The new document was presented by Koba Gvenetadze, NBG president who also reviewed the past 7 years performance in the area of financial education. The event organized by National Bank of Georgia was attended by Davit Onoprishvili, head of Insurance State Supervision Service of Georgia and the employees of the Service. The representatives of legislative and executive government, non-governmental organizations, financial sector, educational institutions and diplomatic corps also attended the presentation.

The previous financial education strategy, developed in 2016, was mainly based on international experience and best practices. The strategy emphasized the importance of financial education, need for better awareness of the benefits of financial education and aimed to deepen coordination and cooperation among stakeholders and to increase opportunities for financial education. The new document was developed on the basis of the experience accumulated in the country and therefore, it responds to current challenges of financial education in a more reasonable manner.

International partners - Ernst Peter Fischer, Ambassador of Germany to Georgia, Florian Messi, the representative of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and Angelique van Haasteren, representative of the Ministry of Finance of the Netherlands spoke about the Georgia’s progress  in enhancing financial education and the performance of the past years. In their speeches, they noted that in terms of activities carried out in recent years, Georgia occupies one of the leading positions in the region, and considering that financial education is a common concern for all countries, Georgia is one of the worthy partners in the European Community.

The new national strategy of financial education will be the main recommendatory document for any party interested in developing financial education. The strategy sets priority areas and tasks and promotes cooperation between stakeholders in a more practical format and increased access to financial education by covering all target groups, implementing activities tailored to their needs and ensuring the sustainability and continuity of these activities.
