THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON PROTECTION OF COMPETITION AND CONSUMER RIGHTS TO BE HELD IN GEORGIA FOR THE FIRST TIME

On November 16-17, 2022, the first international conference on enforcement of competition policy and protection of consumer rights will be held in Georgia. The two-day event will be jointly organized by National Competition Agency, National Bank of Georgia,  Georgian Electricity and Water Supply Regulatory Commission (GNERC), Communications Commission and Insurance State Supervision Service of Georgia. The conference will be opened by the leaders of international organizations who work in the area of competition and consumer rights protection: Teresa Moreira, head of the Competition and Consumer Policies Branch of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD); Frederic Jenny, chairman of the OECD Competition Committee; Dirk Buschle, Deputy Director of the Energy Community Secretariat; Sharunas Keserauskas, Head of the Competition Authority of Lithuania; Theodor Tanner, Head of the Austrian Competition Authority.

It is planned to organize special panel of five regulatory agencies that will be chaired by top officials and will be evaluated by sectors - competitive environment, results and challenges. More than 10 delegations from competition agencies of different countries, local and international experts, representatives of public agencies, regulatory bodies, academia, international organizations and business sector will participate in the conference.

The mechanisms of competition law, consumer rights protection and activities carried out by regulatory services will be discussed at the event. Simultaneously, at the thematic sessions, the participants will discuss the following key topics: competition policy and sustainable development; Competition policy in regulated markets/interagency cooperation; legal guarantees for the protection of consumer rights and peculiarities of the enforcement process; indirect mechanisms of enforcement; current capacity and refusal to supply, theory and practice; practical experience of Georgia and Europe in the field of consumer rights protection, etc. This annual conference is the outcome of the agreement document concluded by five market regulator authorities in 2021, the aim of which is to strengthen competition in the country.
